Next, if it's not set already, come over here to the right where it says Unit and click on this little dropdown, and just make sure it's set to pixels. I'll highlight it and I'll just type in sketches. You don't have to enter this now and we can save it under a new name later, but sometimes it's nice to name it right from the start. First, make sure you're on the Illustration category, which is the icon with the flower, and this will remove any options that don't apply to a simple drawing. We only need to be concerned with three sections of this dialog box. Now there are a lot of options here, so don't get overwhelmed. Select File, New, and this calls up the New Canvas dialog box. Also, this tab area tells us the current canvas is called Illustration, which is the default name Clip Studio Paint assigned to it. And we know that because we're seeing a white space to draw on, here in the center of our screen. Now, if you just installed and launched Clip Studio Paint, it's done us the favor of creating a new canvas for us. So let's see how to set up a canvas with enough pixels to add the amount of detail we need. Well, this is exactly how the pixels on your canvas work. When we get close those same simple blocks are there, but when we get far away from it, the individual blocks disappear and we have the impression of a smooth, clear image. Even though the size of the blocks didn't change, you now have enough of them to add more detail. You won't be able to express small details until you expand your board to a grid of something like 100 blocks. Imagine trying to assemble a drawing using only a grid of 10 blocks wide and 10 blocks tall. You can think of pixels is tiny toy building blocks. That amount of detail is often referred to as a resolution and, in the artist world, resolution is measured in pixels. Regardless of the application you're drawing in, how big your canvas is determines how much detail you can add. One of the most overlooked aspects of digital art is understanding how to set up your canvas.
